Seven lives, a violin, a silence

"A Sweet Silence in Cremona" is a contemporary opera with a libretto by Mark Campbell — Pulitzer and Grammy winner — and music by Roberto Scarcella Perino. A co-production between Teatro Ponchielli in Cremona and the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York, with sets and costumes by Tommaso Lagattola and direction by Cecilia Ligorio.

Imaginarium handled the entire illustration and animation project within the set design. The opera is inspired by the Sound Bank, the January 2019 event during which the streets around the Violin Museum and the G. Arvedi Auditorium in Cremona were closed to traffic to record four masterpiece violins — an event covered by The New York Times.

The plot interweaves seven human lives (and a dog) in the Cremona of those days. Imaginarium's illustrations, animated and projected on stage, create a visual universe that amplifies the musical narrative, transforming the set design into a living character of the opera.

Sweet Silence installation
The installation captures the silent gesture of the Cremonese luthier
“Closed streets, silence, four masterpiece violins playing. From that extraordinary moment, an opera is born that interweaves seven lives.”
